There are many massage techniques that are employed these days. One that has become popular in Western culture is the Japanese art of shiatsu massage. Learn how you can benefit from this healing touch.

Shiatsu is a Japanese word that means “finger pressure.” During the session, the massage therapist will apply pressure with fingers and also assisted muscle movement to correct imbalances in the body.

Massage is used to restore the flow of chi (pronounced chee) or life energy in the body. It is this life energy that maintains the health of the body. Releasing it to flow freely allows the body to heal itself. This is the basis of massage and shiatsu in particular.

Depending on your complaint, whether it be headache, muscle ache, cold or what have you, the problem is not just in that one spot. Your body may be manifesting the problem in that area, but to clear it up takes a whole body approach.

    How It Works

Pressure is applied to the entire body at points that are congested. This is where the chi is blocked. Shiatsu works to restore the circulatory system. Your body may be manipulated in an attempt to find the points where the problem lies. Just because you have a headache, you may feel relief after pressure is applied to your foot.

Once the chi is freed, you may notice changes in your body right away. There are side effects from the procedure, but they are all geared towards health in the body.

Coughing – This can result from the body moving toxins around and trying to clean itself up, so to speak. It can be alarming but it is not due to a cold (unless you had one before the session). The lymphatic system will be releasing toxins into the bloodstream to be eliminated.

Tiredness – Moving and stimulating the immune system can leave you feeling a bit spent after a session. Lie down if you feel this way, and also drink plenty of water.

You can stay clothed during a session but try to wear light clothing so it is easy to move your muscles and joints. The shiatsu session will use a combination of pressure, deep breathing and manipulation. Not only is your chi being restored, but the nervous system and the skeletal system are also positively affected.

Here are some of the benefits of a shiatsu massage:

    * Restores the flow of chi
    * Reduces stress
    * Removes toxins from the body
    * Deep tissue relaxation (this is good for athletes)
    * Improves circulation
    * Improves mental focus.

If you are looking for a massage that will help your entire body, a shiatsu massage may be what you need. It incorporates restorative and preventative techniques. Use it in combination with a proper diet and exercise for full body healing.

You might want to consider the benefits of green tea to improve your health.  It has been used as a standard drink in Asian countries for years. It has helped to maintain youth and vitality. As it has come to the attention of the Western world, more and more people are discovering that it has enhanced their lives.

Green tea is still grown and processed Asia. It is cultivated, dried, pressed and processed from a variety of different trees. Some companies still do the work by hand. It is shipped around the world so others can enjoy the benefits that Asian peoples have known for years.

The following are ways you may benefit from drinking it:

    * Antioxidant protection – Green tea is filled with antioxidant substances called polyphenols. It actually contains a high concentration of them. These substances can retard some of the signs of aging. They also help neutralize free radical action in the body that can lead to cataracts, cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, joint problems and wrinkling.

    * Weight loss – It has been shown that green tea extract led to increased weight loss in subjects participating in studies. Drinking a cup a day can help increase your metabolism so you burn more calories even at rest.

    * Dental health – Drinking green tea might be good for your body beginning with your mouth. It has been suspected that substances in green tea actually neutralize the bacteria in the mouth that can lead to tooth decay and dental plaque. Drink it regularly for the benefit.

    * Disease prevention – Studies are being conducted that show promising results for those with Parkinson’s disease. Drinking green tea can help prevent the condition. Green tea can help prevent the breakdown of nerve cells in the brain leading to a depletion of dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for movement in the body.

    * Infection management – If it can work on the bacteria in the mouth, it can help in other areas of the body as well. Green tea has been shown to help reverse sepsis in laboratory mice. Drinking green tea can boost your immunity to fight off infections so sepsis is not an issue.

    * Heart disease – Regularly drinking green tea may help you control your risk of heart disease. It has been shown that substances in green tea help to reduce the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) in the blood by blocking its oxidation. Not only that, but it also helps to improve levels of good cholesterol (HDL) and keep the arteries pliable and clear.

Are you looking for ways to improve your health? Try drinking some of it in the form of green tea.

Many need the caffeine in a cup of coffee to get going in the morning. When their energy wanes in the mid-morning, it is used as a pick-me-up.

Caffeine is a stimulant. It perks you up and gets your blood flowing faster. Blood vessels are dilated so you get more oxygen flowing. Caffeine is found in coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate and energy drinks. It is also an ingredient in many medications, including headache medications,

Caffeine can open blood vessels so that other medication can reach the site of pain more easily. For someone suffering from a migraine headache, drinking a caffeinated soda can provide quicker relief than a pill. It is not advised to drink a soda as your main remedy, but it can take the edge off while your medication is starting to work.

Energy drinks don’t just keep you awake, they give you more energy. This is desirable for someone who has a lot to do and wants to get it done.

As the blood vessels dilate, more blood can reach the brain and so can more oxygen. You can think more clearly from first thing in the morning.

That extra energy can assist with weight loss. Drinking energy drinks can help you get through a particularly tough workout. As the metabolism ramps up, your body burns more calories to help you lose weight.

With the good also comes a bit of a downside. While caffeine can do all of these things, using it too much can lead to some potential problems.

Caffeine is addictive. Some people must have several cups of coffee. They may have started with one, but end up drinking more as their bodies get used to the effects of one cup. Too much caffeine can lead to jitters that can cause a lack of focus as the day wears on.

When that much caffeine is going through your system, stopping it can make you a bit woozy. Caffeine withdrawal can lead to dizziness, blurry vision and headache. How ironic, since it can also stop a migraine.

High blood pressure is also a factor. Many medications that contain caffeine (such as cold medicine) are being changed to a different formulation for those who have a history of high blood pressure. Caffeine can raise normal blood pressure, which makes it even more dangerous for someone who has a diagnosis of hypertension.

If you are a caffeine drinker, remember that a little can be helpful, but too much can be harmful.

Are you considering birth control by vasectomy? A vasectomy is a male sterilization procedure that takes about 30 minutes to perform. It can be done through a surgical incision or incision free. Before you make your decision, you must discuss it with your partner and ask your doctor all the questions you need to.

    * Children – Are you sure that you don’t want any more children? If you already have a family and don’t want any “surprises,” it can be a most reliable way to prevent unwanted conceptions.  The procedure for men is much simpler than a tubal ligation is for women.

    * Can it be reversed? – Life changes happen. You are married or in a relationship now, but in the future you may be divorced or widowed and find new love. A child may be a shining example of your love for your partner. Ask if the technique used to perform the vasectomy can be reversed so that you can become fertile again should you want to.

    * Before the surgery – If you opt for a surgical procedure, know what is expected of you before the day of surgery. This may include blood work, anesthesia screening or refraining from eating after a certain time. You may also be asked to antiseptically clean and shave the scrotal area before surgery to lower the bacterial count.

    * What are the risks? – There has been talk that there is a risk of prostate cancer if a previous vasectomy has been performed, but that has not been proven. Discuss the risk of failure of the procedure. The chances are small, but it is still worth discussing. Ask about what you will feel when you wake up or come out of anesthesia.

    * The procedure – Find out exactly what the procedure involves, step by step. This can reduce anxiety over what to expect.

    * After the surgery – The scrotal area will be numb for a few hours. You can place ice packs on the area and wear underwear or a jockstrap. Strenuous activity may be prohibited for a few days.

    * Effectiveness – It is still possible to conceive for several months after a vasectomy. There are will be sperm in the semen for about twenty or so more ejaculations. Your doctor will inform you of the need for contraception until the coast is clear. He will continually test you to check the sperm count until it is nil.

All of us have made mistakes in the past, some of which can lead to feelings of guilt. But, you don’t have to live with guilt. There are ways to move on with your life.

What is guilt? It is best described as the feeling of inadequacy that follows a mistake or a blunder. Sometimes, it isn’t even a blunder to anyone other than to the person feeling guilty.

It is not uncommon to make mistakes. But what follows that mistake? If someone else is hurt physically, mentally or financially, you may feel a sense of responsibility to make it right. This is the beginning of guilt.

Whether you hurt someone intentionally or by accident, confessing the wrong can put the situation in perspective. Either the person will forgive you or not. If it is a criminal act, you will be punished or absolved of guilt according to the law.

But, even after all of this happens, what can make a person continue to feel bad about what they have done? Guilty feelings that continue usually start before the incident that evoked the guilt.

What can cause guilt? Here are a few suggestions:

    * Criticism – If you are exposed to criticism all the time, you may feel inadequate. This inadequacy could be directed at you or at a certain task you perform.

    * Lack of resolution – If you can’t talk to the person you hurt, then there is a distinct lack of closure. This can result in you making up scenarios in your mind that revolve around feelings of not being forgiven for the act. You may try harder with others to not hurt or offend them as a result of not being able to make amends in this case.

    * Unfulfilled expectations – Some people feel guilty just because they can’t live up to the expectations of others. They feel disappointment over what they are not, so that who they truly are doesn’t seem to matter.

So how can you counter guilty feelings?

    * Take a realistic view of yourself – Each person makes mistakes. Use them as learning experiences. No one is perfect, but you can try to do better the next time.

    * List your good qualities – We all have some. Keep this list handy for times when feelings of inadequacy creep back in. Post it on your refrigerator and on the bathroom mirror.

    * Avoid comparisons – We all do things differently, but that doesn’t make one method better than another. If you compare yourself to someone else, you are sure to come up short on some point. That is a good way to trigger debilitating guilt.

    * Counter negative thoughts – Stop negative thoughts about yourself in their path. When you have one, counter it with a positive affirmation.

Guilt is a destructive emotion that can hurt you long after the triggering event has passed. Learn to let go and move on.

At one time or another, all of us have done something wrong.  The issue is what we should do about it.

It may be difficult to say goodbye, but it is even harder to say that you’re sorry.   When you do something wrong, first comes guilt, which is a horrible feeling that can lead to many destructive habits. One of those habits is denial. Your guilt is so overwhelming that you pretend that nothing ever happened.

Guilt can also have you searching for someone else to take the blame. No one wants to look bad in another person’s eyes, so they find a scapegoat to ease their feelings. Some of these acts are almost second nature when you have done something wrong.

It all begins with society, which has a view of those who apologize and it can have an effect on our opinion of the act.

    * Weakness – Apologizing can be seen as a defect in your personality. It gives someone else a step over you. If you apologize once, you will do it again.

    * Admission of guilt – Some people apologize to diffuse a situation. To others, this can be seen as an admission of guilt when you are not guilty at all. Some people are afraid of that.

    * Surrender – You are giving over your power to someone else. We have enough people telling us what to do, so we don’t want to voluntarily give that right to someone else.

    * Imperfection – Offering an apology may make you feel that something is wrong with you. You made a mistake and are not perfect, but an apology brings that to light and you feel woefully inadequate.

The tendency can be to avoid situations where you could make a mistake. In the real world, that can potentially stop you from leaving your home. Each time you interact with someone else, there is the chance of a misunderstanding that can lead to an apology needing to be offered.

Here are some ways that you can learn to apologize when you have to without fear:

    * Do it right away – When we wait to offer an apology, we think of many reasons why we shouldn’t or why we couldn’t. Allay your fears by saying you are sorry when the incident occurs.

    * Understand the situation – How would you feel if the same thing happened to you? If you would expect an apology, then offer it to someone else. Say what you would want to hear.

    * Be sincere – Refrain from prefacing your apology and using words that could render it insincere such as “but.” Give your all because anything less will be noticed.

Apologizing is more than saying you are sorry. It is recognizing that someone else has been hurt, either intentionally or unintentionally by you. Your timely response can change the outcome.

How many times have you heard the words “I’m sorry” or heard them said to you.  Here are some ways to say sorry to others and mean it.

As the words are thrown around as often as “I love you,” making a sincere apology takes more than just words. It takes thought and action. If you care about the person or persons that you have hurt, this is an important step.

When someone is hurt, something needs to be done to stop the pain, whether physical or mental. As the person who is charged with the task of righting the wrong, it falls to you.

We have all made an apology to someone without much forethought. When we were a child, we may even have done it with a smirk, showing that it wasn’t a true apology. As we get older, the situations we deal with are more grown up, with bigger hurts at stake.

Here are some ways to apologize and be sincere about it:

    * Communicate – Find out exactly what you did. It could be that the person has the wrong impression of something that you did or said, or, they may even have the wrong person entirely. Simply refusing to apologize won’t work. Learn the facts and proceed from there.

    * Consider the implications of the situation – The other person’s pain is real and shouldn’t be minimized. How have they been affected? Maybe it wasn’t intentional that the person was hurt, but feelings are bruised either way.

    * Accept responsibility – Are you at fault? If so, then accept your position. Accepting that you hurt someone gives you a chance to look at yourself. You made a mistake, but you can grow and learn from it. It doesn’t make you a bad person.

    * Practice – You don’t have to give the apology off the top of your head. Write it down and get your thoughts straight before you talk to the person that was hurt so that it doesn’t sound rehearsed. It gives you a chance to say all you have to say.

    * Feel good about yourself – Again, it doesn’t make you a bad person because you made a mistake and have to apologize. Decide that you will learn from it and go on, even if forgiveness is not forthcoming. You have accepted responsibility and done what was right. Now, it is up to the other person to accept your apology.

    * Meet face to face – For your apology to be proper, it is better to offer your apology in person because if you can look into their eyes, they will be able to see how sincere you are.

Using the tips above, ensure that your apology comes across as sincere and honest, and you will be able to mend any hurts in your relationship with patience and effort.

If you are looking to improve your life, it may require an attitude adjustment. Here are some tips to help you to become an optimist.

Optimism is more than just putting on rose-colored glasses and looking at the world as a fairy tale land. It is about weighing in a realistic light the choices that we have to make.

Beginning each day with a good attitude can affect your entire life. For starters, it affects self-esteem. When you feel good about yourself, you exude a confidence that you might have otherwise not have had. This can lead to better choices to keep that fine feeling you already have.

So, maybe you don’t see the glass as half empty, but you aren’t quite looking at it as half full either. You can make changes that will improve your outlook and approach to life with these tip tips:

    * Keep a cheerful voice – How we perceive how we sound has a big effect on how we are perceived by others. Speak in upbeat tones to put others at ease, and also to increase your mood.

    * Use happy words to describe yourself – Maybe you just lost an account. You can think things like “failure” or “problem” or “disappointment.” But you could also see it as “learning experience” or “opportunity to improve” or even “incentive.” This colors the way that you think.

    * Choose your friends carefully – Who is influencing you? If you are an optimist or wanting to become one, choose friends who are going places and have the traits that you want. Find out how they stay upbeat and emulate their practices.

    * Don’t give in to misery – Misery loves company but it doesn’t have to be yours. These people are looking for anyone to latch onto to spread their venom. Avoid people who constantly mock your efforts to improve yourself, or offer their logic for why you shouldn’t try for your dreams.

    * Correct your posture – When you sit up straight, your organs can function better. You have an improved digestive system. When you stand taller, you feel better. Slouching can indicate a sour mood or bad feelings about yourself.

    * Count your blessings – What is good in your life? Write them down and number them. With twenty good things in your life, why look so down? What if your list gets up to 50 or 100? The longer you think about it, the more items you can find to include. With all that going for you, optimism is not far behind.

    * Meditation – Take control of your body and your mind. Use meditation to get rid of stress and also to change your thought patterns to reflect a positive attitude.

Optimists enjoy a better quality of life. If you want that for yourself, begin with the tips above.

If you are one who sees the glass as half empty, you should know that pessimism is not good for your health.

Pessimism is one way that we look at the world around us. Every situation has different points of views. Let’s think about running a race but not finishing first. You trained hard, but only one person can win. How will you look at the result? You can say that you did your best and will try again next time. Another view would be that you wouldn’t have won anyhow. The latter is the pessimistic view.

Studies have shown that pessimism has been linked to a decrease in physical functioning, mental problems, pains and chronic illnesses. One study at the Mayo Clinic followed patients for thirty years. Those who maintained an optimistic attitude had a lower incidence of medical problems than those who viewed the world in a more pessimistic light.

Pessimism, or a dim view of life, can lead to more than just negative self-fulfilling prophecies. It can lead to depression. Feelings that nothing will go well for you or that you are not worth anyone’s time or attention can lead to depressive thoughts. And depression can lead to physical pain, hostility, poor diet, sleep and many other problems.

The pessimistic way of thinking can also lead to other health conditions. While optimists tend to be younger, better educated and gainfully employed, they are also in better health because they care for themselves. High blood pressure, weight gain, high cholesterol and smoking are traits of a pessimistic view.

Heart problems are also common in less than optimistic people. Studies have shown a lower risk in those with a brighter view of life. There may be an explanation for this.

People who have a better outlook make better choices in life. Because they believe that they have a right to a fruitful life, they take better care of themselves. They exercise regularly, watch their diet and take preventative measures to ensure their health.

Cynical individuals are less likely to make these choices. According to their thought patterns, it wouldn’t make a difference anyway. So, they may smoke, eat unhealthy foods, live sedentary lives and avoid doctors unless they really need them, which mean a lower rate of preventative care. All of that can lead to heart disease, diabetes, a chance of stroke, obesity and other conditions that adversely affect their health.

Changing your pessimistic ways may be able to help you increase not only your health, but also your life expectancy. Who knew that seeing the glass as half full could save your life? Combat unhealthy habits with a new attitude.

Most of us have heard of appendicitis, but do you know where your appendix is? When it acts up it can create a true medical emergency and prompt treatment can be a matter of life or death.

The appendix is a vestigial organ in the body. This means that it once had a purpose in the body but doesn’t any longer. It is believed to be the remnants of a second stomach which would have further broken down food in much the same way as a cow has more than one stomach in order to digest the food it eats.

The appendix is called the vermiform appendix because it resembles a fat little worm. It is located at the end of the cecum (the area where the end of the small intestine connects to the ascending portion of the large intestine).

Usually it doesn’t cause problems, but it can become inflamed if fecal or other matter gets trapped within its walls. The appendix can swell to double its size or more from the inflammation caused by it becoming clogged. Inflammation that is untreated can spread bacteria throughout the walls of the appendix, leading to a rupture.

If the appendix ruptures, then fecal matter and bacteria will spill into the abdominal cavity causing a condition known as peritonitis. Untreated, peritonitis can make you very sick and septic, leading to death in some cases. It is imperative that the appendix is removed before any rupture occurs to avoid these complications.

So, how do you know if you have appendicitis? The appendix is located in the right lower quadrant of your abdomen. In this region or anywhere near this region, you may experience abdominal pain. The pain begins once the appendix has become infected by fecal matter impacted in it and bacteria are beginning to swarm. So any sharp sudden pain in that area, accompanied by fever, should be checked out just to be on the safe side.

Doctors also talk about rebound tenderness. This means that when the affected area is pressed, there is not any pain until the hand is removed and the tissue moves back out. This is common in cases of appendicitis.

Because there is a serious infection present in the body, white blood cells are racing to the site to fight off the bacteria. In addition to the fever, you will likely experience vomiting and nausea and a lack of appetite as a result.

If you experience these symptoms, go straight to the emergency room at your local hospital. Time is of the essence. You may be close to a rupture and they will be able to give you something for the pain while they investigate your symptoms.

Treatment for your appendicitis may include antibiotics. If you do not have really severe pain and the appendix is not trying to rupture, antibiotics may diffuse the situation and return the appendix to normal. You will be kept under observation to see if the treatment is working, in which case, you will not need emergency surgery.

If you do require surgery, it will take you several days to cover in hospital and about 6 weeks until your abdominal muscles have healed and you can go back to your regular lifestyle. While this may sound terribly inconvenient, it is not nearly as bad as having a ruptured appendix and peritonitis.

So if you are experiencing any unusual sharp sudden pain in your lower right abdomen, accompanied by fever, nausea and vomiting, be sure to go to the emergency room to see if it is appendicitis.
