The fear drives the sufferer to do whatever they can, no matter how extreme, to keep the weight off. The catch here is that their distorted view of their body prevents them from ever losing enough weight.
Doctors don’t know what causes anorexia nervosa. Lately the increase in the prevalence of the condition has been blamed on society’s image of beauty. When young girls (and boys), see the beautiful bodies of models gracing the covers of magazines and the movie screen, their own inadequacies about their body surface.

What is it about raw foods that have people gravitating towards them? Raw foods were meant to be digested by your body. Processed foods came along as a way of preserving meats and other perishables. The refrigerator used to be called an ice box because it really was a box of ice that kept fresh meats and other foods cold until ready to eat. Salting and sugaring came into use as preservatives in lieu of using the ice box.
Raw foods are edible in their natural state. A little washing gets the dirt off but otherwise they can be eaten fresh out of the garden. Think of tomatoes, strawberries, green beans, cantaloupe and other foods. When eaten fresh, all of the nutrients inside are transferred to your body where they can be used.
Food that contains no preservatives or processes that alter their natural state are easier to digest in the body. Raw foods from plant sources contain their own enzymes to aid in digestion. The reason is that plants are living things. Less effort is needed by the body to produce enzymes to break down these foods.
That is not the case with processed foods or processed fruits and vegetables. The pasteurization process removes any harmful bacteria, which is good. The heating process, however, removes major nutrients that are the reason for eating fruits and vegetables in the first place. Added preservatives need enzymes manufactured by the body to break them down for nutrient use.
Raw foods contain natural sugars which can feed the sweet cravings we have developed over time spent eating processed foods. It takes longer for raw foods to digest, meaning you are not hungry as often and your blood sugar remains stable throughout the day. Want to give your kids fruit juice? Juice the fruit yourself for a natural sugary taste that provides a bundle of good vitamins and minerals. Your kids will love the natural taste of raw foods when they are started on that type of diet from a young age.
There are foods like potatoes, cabbage and sweet potatoes that are cooked before eaten. Cooking these raw foods at home supplies more nutrients than the canning process. You can make sure that they are not overcooked and therefore lacking much nutritional value.
It’s not realistic to think that you will eat raw foods all the time. Meat can’t be eaten raw and most people arenít willing to give it up. But, there is a solution. Eat your meat, but eat it in limited quantities while filling up on raw foods like fruits, vegetables and nuts.

This method combines elements of boxing, martial arts and aerobics in order to provide an overall physical toning and workout. Unlike other variations of kickboxing, cardio kickboxing has no physical contact between participants. It’s simply a cardiovascular workout done for the many benefits it provides.
Cardio kickboxing classes normally begin with a period of 10-15 minutes of warm-up exercises. These may include stretching and traditional exercises such as push-ups or jumping jacks, followed by a 30-minute kickboxing session including such movements as kicks, knee strikes and punches. There are some instructors who may use various pieces of equipment such as punching bags or jump ropes to change things up.
After this intense period of the workout, a period lasting at least 5 minutes should be devoted to cooling down, and then followed by at least 10 minutes of stretching and muscle conditioning. Stretching is a very important step, especially for beginners. The chances of straining or pulling muscles with this type of workout are high. Proper stretching helps relax muscles and prevent potentially serious injuries.

* Roundhouse kick: Stand with the right side of your body facing an imaginary target. With knees bent and feet shoulder width apart, lift your right knee, pointing it just slightly to the right of the target. Pivot your body toward the same direction. Kick with your right leg as if you were aiming at the target. Repeat with your other leg.
* Front kick: Stand with feet shoulder width apart. Bend your knees slightly, pulling your right knee up toward your chest. Point your knee in the direction of the imaginary target. Kick out with the ball of your foot. Repeat with your other leg.
* Side kick: Start with the right side of your body facing the target. Pull your right knee up toward your left shoulder, bending your knees slightly as you kick in the direction of the target. The outside of your foot or heel should be the part that would hit the target. Repeat with your other leg.
Besides keeping your body fit, kickboxing has many other benefits. According to a study by the ACE, itís possible for you to burn anywhere from 300 to 450 calories an hour with kickboxing!
Kickboxing is also a fantastic method for reducing and relieving stress. Its rigorous workout of controlled punching and kicking movements, carried out with the amount of discipline and skill demanded for any martial arts training, can do wonders for alleviating feelings of frustration and anger. Practicing kickboxing moves may also provide assistance in the improvement of balance, flexibility, co-ordination, and endurance.
With the added benefit of learning self-defense moves, kickboxing is an all-inclusive routine all in one package. Many kickboxing fans are known to have said the sport not only makes them feel healthier, but more empowered and confident as well.

Summer is around the corner, and for the next week Healthful Goddes is going to dedicate a segment “For The Body” with information about: Tai-Chi, Judo, Akido and Kickboxing!

The first article of “For the Body” is about Tai-Chi, the martial art considered to be a form of meditation. People practicing Tai Chi, also known as “players” learn to emphasize not only slow, deep breathing but rhythmic movements as well. This assists development of a focused and calm mind.Tai Chi is an enjoyable activity for those of all ages and fitness levels. Each individual can practice the postures and movements in a manner relative to their own level of fitness, energy and state of mind. Each individual starts where they are, and learns at their own pace. It can be beneficial to the fittest athlete, the teenager and everyone in between. You may even find those in wheelchairs as part of a group practicing Tai Chi in the park near your home. You could take part even if you don’t think you could be coordinated or agile enough. These are all aspects you can learn at your own pace.
Traditional Chinese Medicine states that disease results from weak and impaired flow of qi (pronounced chee) through the meridians. There are fourteen main energy meridians which link internal organs and the entire physical body with the mind and emotional systems. These meridians arenít visible; however, you can detect them by the energy which moves through them. With the gentle movements of Tai Chi these energy channels are opened, thereby allowing the rhythm of the movements of the muscles, spine and joint to release energy through the body. This flushes out any stagnant qi, replacing it with fresh qi that is newly oxygenated.
The slow pace of Tai Chi provides the effect of performing a body scan to clear any place where there may be tension building up or stored. By releasing the grip of debris in both mind and body, we allow more space for positive aspects such as love and light to enter our lives. Aside from the meridians Tai Chi uses to work the internal organs, it also clears the joints of any potential debris in those areas, such as calcium deposits. This benefit is a result of the different movements requiring the body to rotate to about 95% of its ability. Tai Chiís health benefits are being quickly discovered in western medicine.
Health and life are simple reflections of our mind state. Body and breath move along with the mind. This encourages cleaning out any roadblocks which normally would keep us from moving forward. These roadblocks keep us locked in emotional and psychological patterns that arenít always healthy. The empowerment of “meditation in motion” can keep us in the train of thought that change itself is a constant in our lives, and new beginnings always follow closures.Whenever stress and tension start taking their toll on health and well-being, it would be wise to look to those who have attained that level of harmony within the body. Low-carb diets like Atkins, Zone, Sonoma and South Beach suppress appetite better than traditional diets because high protein levels decrease hunger better than carbohydrates or fats. Restricting carbohydrates eliminates often-indulged foods such as bread, cereal, soft drinks, French fries and pizza.† By simply excluding carbohydrate foods, patients following low carb/high protein diets typically reduce their caloric intake by approximately 500 calories a day. Water loss accounts for a large amount of the early rapid decreases in bodyweight and uses up carbohydrate stores in your muscles and liver.
Unfortunately, high-protein diets can cause a number of health problems. These include, but arenít limited to:
1 – Kidney failure. Protein-rich diets put added strain on the kidneys, which makes them susceptible to kidney disease.
2 – High cholesterol. Diets high in protein are directly linked to high cholesterol. Studies have linked high cholesterol levels to an elevated risk of developing heart disease, stroke and cancer.
3 – Osteoporosis and kidney stones. High protein diets can cause people to eliminate more calcium than normal through their urine. Over extended periods of time, this can increase a person’s risk of osteoporosis and kidney stones.
4 – Cancer. Foods containing carbohydrates also contain vitamins, minerals, fiber as well as antioxidants. By avoiding carbs, you are depriving your body of these essential elements. Itís very important to obtain protein from a variety of foods. Eating whole grains as well as fruits and vegetables will ensure your need for protein is met, but will also help reduce your risk of developing cancer.
5 – Unhealthy metabolic state (ketosis). Low carb diets can cause ketosis, where your body burns fat instead of glucose for energy. This could result in potential organ failure or other problems such as gout, kidney stones, or kidney failure. Ketones can dull a person’s appetite, and cause nausea and bad breath. Ketosis can be prevented by eating at least 100 grams of carbohydrates a day.
Before starting this or any diet, be sure to talk with your doctor to determine what approach is right for you. They may prescribe a low-carb/high protein diet, but will likely require you to come in periodically for check-ups. This type of diet may be popular, but your doctor may recommend another one; following their advice could save your life.

Falling under names such as Atkins, Zone, Sonoma and South Beach, they are technically variations of the same trend. They recommend 30% to 50% of the dieters total calories be consumed in the form of protein, while stressing removal or drastic reduction of carbohydrate consumption.
Recommendations made by the American Heart Association, the National Cholesterol Education Program, and the American Cancer Society suggest fewer calories are received from protein. This provides the body with nutrients deemed essential to building, maintenance, and repair of body tissue.
How Do These Diets Work?
By restricting carbohydrates to a fraction of what Americans typically eat, the body goes into a metabolic state called ketosis. The body burns its own fat for fuel where it would normally burn carbohydrates instead. A person in a state of ketosis receives energy from ketones, which is the fuel created by the breakdown of small carbon fragments. This leads to the breakdown of fat stores. Bodies in ketosis tend to feel less hungry, resulting in eating less than you might otherwise. However, ketosis can also cause serious health problems.
This diet results in your body changing from being a carbohydrate-burning engine into a fat-burning engine. Instead of wanting carbohydrate-rich stores, your fat stores become a primary energy source. This in turn results in weight loss, which can occur quite rapidly.
