Veganism is different from vegetarianism. Vegetarians don’t eat meat, but they may eat fish, dairy and/or eggs. It all depends on the category.

If you are a vegan, then to you it probably makes sense to want to raise your child that way as well. Therefore for a child’s nutritional safety, you must know what to consider in a vegan diet so they stay healthy.

Vegans are opposed to eating any animal products of any description, and many vegans consume only fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains and legumes.

It can be a challenge to eat in this manner, but for children of parents who have done it, there is usually little issue. What can be most challenging is making sure that all of the required nutrients for a child are met with the vegan lifestyle.

Many foods don’t take much tweaking to make them vegan friendly. For instance, babies usually drink breast milk or formula. You can buy formula that has no milk solids in it. Experts say that breastfeeding is better for infants because they pick up extra immunity from their mother.

When it comes to introducing solid foods, rice cereal is often used. It doesn’t contain meat or dairy so it is just the same as what any child would eat.

When your child is ready to move on to solid foods, choose mashed fruits and veggies. Mashing your own can avoid the extra sugars added to store-bought varieties. Usually the most important nutrient that causes concern is protein. Without meat, it can be hard to get enough protein each day for proper body function.

Introduce nuts, legumes and soy. Soy is a plant protein. It has less fat than animal protein. Beans are also a low-fat protein alternative. Tofu is a soy material that can be used as a meat substitute to make dishes.

Know what your child needs to eat every day. This includes examining the FDA food pie (formerly the food pyramid) for children to be sure you are keeping their diet healthy.

Vitamins and minerals are also crucial to proper development:

* Calcium – Eat green leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes, beans and even soy milk.

* Vitamin D – This vitamin helps synthesize calcium in the body. It is normally found in dairy but you can get it from fortified soy milk and also from time spent out in the sun.

* Vitamin B12 –The B vitamins are great for boosting metabolism.

With a vegan diet, your child will enjoy the tastes of whole foods such as grains, vegetables and fruits. They get all of the nutrition with very little fat as long as you plan well.

Osteopathy is a holistic medicinal practice that addresses the entire person in an attempt to heal the body. The idea is to help the body to begin to heal itself.

Osteopathic doctors study medicine, as well as other approaches to healing. It can be argued that all problems of sickness in the body are not best served through invasive approaches or medication. Many times, lifestyle changes are a root cause and getting at the root can begin to solve the problem.

Pain in some form is a major reason that people visit a doctor. An assessment of the area that is experiencing the pain, along with a look at other body systems, gives the osteopath a complete picture of what is going on. After a trauma, pain can be the result of the body finding another way to deal with compensating for what has happened on the inside.

Osteopathic doctors are sought mostly for pain – back, neck and sports injuries. However, besides musculoskeletal disorders, they are also consulted for asthma, digestive maladies, UTIs and reproductive conditions.

An osteopath may suggest a number of approaches to your care after an assessment. One area that is explored is diet, since what we eat can affect our body. The absence of nutritional vitamins and minerals can leave deficiencies in body systems that are crucial to improving the immune response and pain relief.

Certain lifestyle choices that we make can hinder our recovery from injury. For instance, smoking is bad for your body in many ways, but it can also retard the healing process. By getting rid of this habit, healing has a better chance of occurring.

How It Works

The treatments offered by an osteopath are non-invasive. They use massage techniques, manipulations or adjustments of the skeletal system and stretching to break connections that should not be forming in the body, in favor of returning the body to correct alignment and function. Joints, nerves and muscles are involved in the osteopathic treatment.

Deep massage – These techniques manipulate the soft tissues deep within the muscles. They can loosen connections between muscle and bone where there shouldn’t be any. Scar tissue formed by the inflammatory process can lead to trapped nerves and pain.

Stretching – Moving the joints and muscles through various routines can help to realign the skeletal system and restore the range or motion to your limbs. The result will be restoring the proper nerve response to the muscles and joints so that the proper pathway is followed.

Osteopathic medicine treats the entire person. Illness can sometimes be a multi-dimensional problem that needs multiple approaches to be resolved.

Vegetarians also want ways that they can stay healthy when they don’t have a lot of time to prepare a meal. Here are some ideas for quick vegetarian lunch ideas.

One challenge for vegetarians is getting enough protein in their diet. When meat is absent, it is more important to choose food staples that will provide enough to sustain the body’s daily needs.

Lunch can be hard to come by, especially on a busy schedule. Many resort to fast food choices or skipping lunch in favor of a snack from the vending machine. Even though these options may be technically vegetarian, they can contain a lot of excess calories and fat that no one needs.

Here are some tips for preparing quick vegetarian meals.

Plan ahead – Make sure that your pantry is stocked with all the staples that you need to make as many different meals as you need to provide lunch for the entire week.

Prepare food – If you can get it ready ahead of time, prepare whatever needs to be cooked so it will cut down on what you have to do to get ready each day. This can include chopping vegetables, making pizza crusts or tortillas, slicing fruit, cooking beans or rice.

Following are some quick lunch ideas, both hot and cold:

Cold Lunch Ideas

* Veggie sub – A foot long sub can be made on Sunday and cut up in three or four pieces for lunchtime meals. Try Portobello mushrooms, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes and a low-calorie mayonnaise. Carry the mayonnaise in a small container to be applied just before you eat.

* Pasta salad – Pasta makes a filling and quick meal anytime. Try whole wheat pasta to maximize your intake of whole grains. Add, black and/or green olives, celery, mushrooms, pimento, parmesan cheese and toss with Italian dressing for a zesty quick lunch. Spoon it into lunch-size containers for easy transport. Since it is made cold, you can eat it on the run.

* Hummus and chips – You may want something light one day for lunch. You can buy hummus or make your own. Grind your own chickpeas; add healthy oil and flavoring to get just the taste you want. Toast pita chips ahead of time and store them in an airtight container for up to a week. Place a few in a snack bag to eat with your hummus dip.

Hot Lunch Ideas

* Vegetable soup – A pot of soup can be prepared on Sunday and eaten during the week. Any leftovers can be frozen for another time. Soup can be heated up in minutes in a microwave.

* Vegetable pizza – Create personal pan pizzas ahead of time and freeze them until you need them. Top with your favorite veggies. For better results, prebake the crusts before freezing.

Vegetarian lunches don’t have to be complicated or full of fat. .

Carrying a new life inside you is wonderful, but can sometimes be frightening. Here are some tips to help you stay healthy and safe while pregnant.

There is a lot of advice that people will try to give you when you are pregnant, but the best advice will come from your doctor and concerns how you take care of your body and that of your unborn child.

Pregnancy Facts

Your body will need nutrients that it may not have been getting previously, and your caloric consumption will increase when you become pregnant. That new life is going through new growth phases every day and needs calories to fuel that growth. Expectant mothers are encouraged to eat more to help with this. For the fetus, a variety of vitamins and minerals are needed for proper organ function.

Nutrition Tips

To make sure that mother is properly feeding the fetus and it is growing at the right rate, here are a few nutritional guidelines:

* Take a multivitamin each day – A complete vitamin will contain all the vitamins needed for healthy brain and neurological functioning. This is important in the first trimester of pregnancy to help avoid many kinds of birth defects. In particular, folic acid needs to be included.

* Eat whole grains – These grains can lower cholesterol and help keep your blood sugar in check during pregnancy. Grains also help keep cravings at bay so you won’t feed a sweet tooth for the next nine months.

* Drink lots of water – Proper hydration can help with waste elimination for you and the fetus. It can also help keep your skin healthy and firm.

Fitness Tips

* Stay active – After the first trimester, you will be advised what exercises are no longer safe for you to perform. You may not be able to dance actively, but you can participate in less vigorous but equally effective activities. Walking or swimming are both beneficial.

* Avoid strenuous activities – Lifting weights, high-impact aerobics and even riding a bike can be dangerous due to the changes in your body. The added weight of the pregnancy can leave you unsteady at times. Any activity that depends on balance can be a danger to you and your baby.

* Avoid losing weight – It is not recommended that pregnant women lose weight. Engage in activities to keep the muscles strong as they aid in easier childbirth. If you find that you are losing weight, increase your calorie consumption.

Pregnancy can be both emotionally and physically life altering. Use the tips above to stay in shape and in good health as you carry the new life inside your body.

If you are a teenaged girl or you know a teen girl, shifting hormonal levels and peer pressure can lead to unhealthy food choices. Here are some tips to help stay healthy through good nutrition.

Good nutrition is important in all stages of life and for teen girls, it can be crucial. As they experience puberty, the body changes. For girls, this means that deposits of fat shift to the hips. The pelvis widens to prepare for eventual childbirth. The breasts begin to grow larger. This is also a fat deposit where milk will be produced in the event of a pregnancy.

These bodily changes can be alarming and also unpleasant for many girls. It is not uncommon for adolescent girls to fall prey to some form of eating disorder – namely anorexia or bulimia – during this time in their lives.

Staying off this path is essential not only to present health, but also future health for girls; therefore, begin by instilling confidence through knowledge.

When a girl learns how her body works, she can take back some of the control she may feel she has lost. The body is doing what it is supposed to be doing at that time in her life. She may worry about getting fat, but she won’t have to if proper nutrition is observed.

Nutrition Tips

* Eat breakfast – People underestimate its importance. Breakfast fuels the mind and the body after a long sleep (and, teenagers do sleep a lot). It can also stop cravings for fats and sweets that can add fat to the body.

* Choose healthier snacks – Instead of hitting the snack machine, try fat-free microwave popcorn with spray butter. For a girl on the go, celery sticks with peanut butter or fresh fruit are easy to carry and fast to eat.

* Create your own snacks – One way to ensure that they will eat better is to let them have a hand in preparing their own food. They learn about food and how different ones affect the body, and at the same time they feel in control by preparing what will keep them healthy and give them the look that they want.

* Eat every few hours – If weight loss or weight maintenance is what she wants, keeping the metabolism high is the key. Eating often burns more calories. Eating healthy forms of grains, fats, protein and dairy lead to more fat burning because nutrients that the body can use are being provided.

Adolescent girls often turn to starvation diets to thwart what nature is doing within their bodies. However, there is a better way with a few nutrition tips, a positive self-image and an understanding of how the body works.

What we eat plays a big role in how our skin looks. When the inside of the body is not working at optimal levels, the outside can’t either. Let us discuss what vitamins can play a part in clearing up acne.

What Is Acne?

Acne affects the skin and usually only facial skin. You have heard of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and zits. These different skin problems can become infected and spread, leading to the acne that many experience all over their face.

There are many treatments on the market, but many don’t work for every person as they treat the symptoms, but not the root cause of the acne. Sometimes we can exacerbate our condition by the foods that we eat. If you start out with pimples, an increase in their frequency can indicate an acne infection.

Causes of Acne

Acne can have a variety of contributing factors. Some you can’t control, such as your genetic make-up and even how your hormones are behaving. However, there are others that you can control, such as hygiene and diet.

As far as the hygiene, washing your face and exfoliating can go a long way to keeping your pores clean from future outbreaks of acne, but this will only carry you so far if the nourishment that your skin is getting is inadequate.

Vitamins and Your Skin

To help clear up your complexion, consider what you are eating. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, we don’t eat as well as we should. Food is not just fuel for the body; each good food contains vitamins and minerals that our organs need at their most basic level. We are often missing out on many of those, and that deficiency can allow conditions such acne to flourish.

Increasing certain vitamins in your diet can do a lot to increase the health of your skin. Start by taking a multivitamin each day as many may contain the vitamins that you need. For those do not, there are food choices that you can make:

* Vitamin A – This is a component of some acne treatments. Acquiring it through foods such as fruits and vegetables is more desired by the body because it is in its natural form. Vitamin A also promotes new cell growth.

* Omega-3 fatty acids – These acids are known to reduce inflammation in the tissues, and acne is definitely an inflammation. Choices include fish, fish oil, and olive oil.

* Zinc – Boosts immune function.

* B vitamins – Increasing B vitamins can reduce inflammation on the skin. Opt for B-complex vitamin supplements so that there are no deficiencies.

Vitamins are important to all organs, including the skin. Increasing their presence in your diet (while decreasing unhealthy choices) can improve the overall health of your skin.

Sweets spike our blood sugar and give us a rush. If you are tired, eating sugar can not only taste good, but also provide the needed energy, at least for about an hour or so. The downside is that in order to achieve the same high again, you need more sugar.

The Facts

There are misconceptions about sugar. In the body, sugar is all right in moderation, as are all foods. It’s when we eat too much sugar that we have a problem. If you are trying to lose weight, a sweet tooth can derail you.

Ways to Tame the Sweet Tooth

You can lose the sweet tooth without going cold turkey, which often increases our cravings for the thing that we are trying to avoid. Don’t think of it as avoiding sugar, but as trying to increase the presence of something else.

* Cut your sugar in half – If you are used to having a double scoop of ice cream, take a single scoop in a bowl instead of on a cone. Track your snacks. If you eat sugar more than once a day, cut back to once a day as a start.

* Include protein at each meal – It is a fact that protein cuts down on cravings and also keeps the munchies at bay. Eat a boiled egg at breakfast or a slice of cheese.

* Increase your fiber intake – Fiber cleans out the digestive system and also keeps you feeling full. It is hard to crave sweets with a full stomach. Try whole grain breads for sandwiches, oatmeal for breakfast, and add more vegetables.

* Opt for natural sugars – Eating fruits that are sweet not only gives you that sweet taste, but also nutrients such as vitamin A and C. For a sweeter taste, try dried fruit where the effects are concentrated. Watch out for added sugar, though. You may want to invest in your own dehydrator.

* Eat before you go out – This is a trick that works. Eat a small snack or protein or a salad before going out to dinner with friends or to a party. It will cut down on grazing on sweet fare.

* Reward yourself without food – Sometimes we reward ourselves with food for promotions and celebrations. Instead, go shopping. A reward won’t increase your sweet tooth or your waistline.

You can tame and even lose that sweet tooth without going cold turkey. Take a little time and a few steps to get it done right.

Trying to lose weight can frustrate some people who work hard yet still don’t see the results that they want. Here are a few ways that you can boost your metabolism to achieve success.

What Is Metabolism?

Metabolism is the rate at which your body uses the calories in the food that you eat. There is a common misconception that thinner people must have faster metabolisms and obese people must have slower ones.

Food is the fuel for the engine that runs your body. When you give it the proper fuel, it will run like a well-oiled machine. When you give it too much of the wrong foods, it can clog up the engine and slow down the machine. When you give the body too many calories it will store them as fat as not enough calories are burned during daily activities.

There are two ways to handle this. One, you can consume fewer calories, which means less excess to turn into fat in the body. Two, you can burn more calories. This is accomplished by ramping up your daily activities. Include exercise at least three times a week.

Tips for Speeding Up Your Metabolism

Here are some tips to help you keep your metabolism high at all times.

The body burns calories to perform regular maintenance at the cellular level. This is one reason not to eat fewer than 1,000 calories a day. If you consume less, you are hampering the body’s efforts to keep you working at optimal levels.

Without enough fuel, the metabolism can come to a halt. It’s the starvation principle. The body, in an attempt to preserve itself, will hold onto fat stores when food is not available. It doesn’t know that it really isn’t starving and nothing will convince it of that fact except eating more food.

Eat several times a day. When we were young, we were taught to eat three square meals. To get the metabolism revved up, eating every two to three hours is essential. Constantly giving the body something to process stokes the fire.

Include protein in each meal. It helps reduce your cravings between meals. Protein is also the main component of muscle tissue. You need muscle because it burns more fat even at rest than other tissues.

Don’t skip breakfast. After an overnight fast of about eight hours, the body needs food to get the metabolism off and running. You could be setting yourself up for a sluggish metabolism all day if you don’t eat at least a small bit of food within an hour of when you wake.

Today, most people are concerned with eating more healthily. That has extended to the milk we drink and the dairy products that we consume.

What Is Organic?

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has set down guidelines in order for foods to be declared as organic on their labels. When it comes to milk and dairy products, here are the guidelines.

Cows that are considered giving organic milk have to eat from the pasture most of the time. There is no time limit set, but there is debate going on about whether grass-fed cows give better milk than those fed with hay or grain. Normally cows would eat only grass, but times have changed and their diet can now include grain as well.

Cows must not have been injected with growth hormones, which can help cows produce more milk. Many consumers are afraid that these hormones will be transferred to their milk and affect their children.

Cows are not allowed to be given antibiotics. If a cow becomes sick and needs to be given antibiotics, they cannot rejoin the herd for at least a year. Testing is done to ensure that the antibiotic is not in the cow and not in the milk that is shipped from the farm.

Milk has to be tested regularly for certain compounds. Organic milk must have no more than a specified level of pesticides. These pesticides could be found in the grain or in the field where the cows are grazing.

If all of these conditions are met, then the milk is certified by the Government to be organic and can carry that label on the store shelves; however, it also carries a higher price tag.

Benefits of Organic Milk and Dairy Products

Organic milk has lower levels of pesticides and hormones. Growth hormones are found in different animals and are thought to affect the human body through consumption of meat treated with hormones. This is not a concern with organic milk.

Along with organic milk, there are now dairy products made using certified organic milk. That includes cheese, cottage cheese and yogurt. Vitamins are still added to the milk to increase its nutritional value.

While there are no studies concluding that organic is better than regular milk, you can rest easy knowing that you are getting all of the nutrition with none of the potential side effects of other substances in your dairy products.

There are many choices of cow’s milk in the marketplace. Milk provides us with calcium, vitamin D and a healthy amount of fat and protein. Milk can come from other animals as well, but here we will concentrate on the different kinds of cow’s milk and non-animal milk products:

* Whole milk – This milk has a rich texture and contains about 4 percent milk fat and is fortified with vitamins A and D. Children who are weaned off breast milk are given whole milk to meet their nutritional needs.

* Two percent milk – This milk has fewer milk fats. It contains ten grams of protein and is fortified with vitamins A and D like whole milk. This milk has less richness due to its lack of milk fat.

* One percent milk – This is the closest to skim milk, but still with some substance that is thicker than water. It gives you the benefit of the added vitamins, but without the milk fat. If you are eating to lose weight, try this or skim milk.

* Skim milk – Contains no milk fat. This milk provides fewer calories than whole milk. It has a bluish tint and is more the consistency of water. It contains added vitamins, just like whole milk.

* Organic milk – This milk is much like whole milk, but has met the guidelines set down by the U.S. Government for obtaining milk from organic farms. It has fewer pesticides, hormones and antibiotics than can be contained in regular milk.

* Buttermilk – Has a yellowish appearance and smells sour. The reason for that is that it is soured milk. It is made from low-fat milk and contains sweeteners for taste. It can be used to make biscuits, pancakes and waffles.

* Soy milk – For those who are vegetarian or vegan and don’t want to eat animal products. Soy milk comes from soy protein, ground soybeans. It is more like a beverage, but has the consistency of milk and lots of protein.

* Flavored milk – Made from two percent or fat-free milk. Flavoring is added for strawberry milk. Cocoa is added for chocolate milk. Sweetener is also added for taste.

* Powdered milk – This milk is processed and heat-treated to remove bacteria. It is a mixture of whole milk and part skim milk. Water is removed from the liquid to produce the powder. It has a longer shelf life and can be reconstituted with water for cereal and recipes.

* Condensed milk – Used to sweeten recipes. It is milk from which water has been removed and sugars added to make it thick.

There are many other types of milk on the market, including goat’s milk. The type of milk that you choose depends on what you feel is best for your family’s nutrition.
