As the weather gets warmer, we all want to wear lighter weight clothing, but the sun can be harsh on tender skin. Here are a few beauty tips to help keep your skin healthy in the hottest weather.

The skin is the largest organ of the body and protects all the other organs inside the body. It allows oxygen and other nutrients to be absorbed by the body, while preventing harmful substances from entering. It also excretes waste products that are harmful to the body. The skin also mirrors the health of the inside of our bodies. When something is wrong, the skin will show it.

Here are a few beauty secrets to keeping your skin looking its best at the time of year when you want to show it off:

    * Drink water – Water is important for the body. The majority of our body cells are composed of water. Without it, the body cannot function. Each day, we lose water through perspiration, respiration and urination, which must be replenished. When you begin to feel thirsty, you are already in the process of becoming dehydrated.

    * Remove dead skin cells – This is often done through exfoliation. Using a sugar scrub once a week can remove excess dead skin cells from the body and the face. Exfoliation also prevents pimples by eliminating clogged pores.

    * Make good food choices – Eating a lot of fat can lead to an acne problem, and it can also add fat to your body. In the summer, everyone wants to go light. Choose salads and sandwiches instead of fried foods. Eat smaller meals more often instead of three heavier ones.

    * Wear a hat – When you are out in the sun, wearing a hat protects the sensitive skin of your face not only from the sun, but also from wind damage.

    * Wear sunscreen – Even if you are gardening, sunscreen is important. Without a layer of protection between you and the sun, the harmful UV rays can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and damage them. Use the strongest SPF you can find – at least 50 – even when out in the sun for only 30 minutes, and reapply every two hours.

    * Moisturize – The heat can dry out your skin. After a long day outside, bathe and then moisturize your skin so that it can stay supple even while you sleep. Use a light one so that you are not in danger of clogging your pores.

To make your skin ready for the summer sun and keep it looking good, you should protect it first.

When the weather gets warmer, everyone wants to show off their nails. But, since they have been hidden most of the winter you may not have noticed those tiny white spots.

The proper name for white spots on nails is leukonychia punctata. They are are more common than you might think and can develop for a number of reasons.

The first reason is trauma to the nail. You may see white spots on fingernails and/or toenails. People who bite their nails are usually the ones who have them most often. The damage to the nail doesn’t have to be extensive for a white spot to appear. As the nail grows out, the white spot usually grows out with it until it is gone.

A defect in the formation of the nail can also be a reason for white spots. The nails grow by a process called keratinization. The nail is hard protein that is an extension from the skin. There may be air bubbles trapped in the nail plate leading to this phenomenon.

Mild infections can also lead to white spots on the nails. This is often seen in toenails. Because toes are usually stuffed in shoes where it is dark and moist, fungus is more likely to grow there. As a result, evidence of it can be seen as white spots on toenails.

Aggressive techniques and cutting too close to the skin can also cause trauma that leads to poor nail formation. You may even discover that you are allergic to some types of nail polish. Coming in contact with your nail could lead to white spots appearing as a sign of trauma.

There are different kinds of leukonychia. Leukonychia totalis describes a general whiteness over the entire nail. With leukonychia partialis, only a part of the nail is affected. Leukonychia striata indicates that there are white lines that run across the nail.

If you are concerned about white spots on your nails, talk to your dermatologist. They will more than likely go away with time but, your doctor may recommend using Vitamin E oil to moisturize the nail back to health. This will also help to nourish the skin around your nails and help to prevent splitting.

A diet rich in vitamins, minerals and other nutrients keeps hair and nails strong. White spots could also be a factor of zinc deficiency and adding that to your diet could clear up your problem.

The teenage years are full of excitement and bodily changes. It is important to stay on top of your hygiene and one area in particular to pay attention to is your hair.

Because of the hormonal changes during puberty and teenage years, taking care of hair can be a real problem. One day your hair is shiny and laying just the right way, and the next it is unmanageable. These problems can be compounded if you have oily hair, making it stringy, flat and full of odor.

The hair produces oil called sebum. It is this oil that covers and protects the hair. The hair is made up of three layers. The outer layer is called the cuticle. Comprised of tightly overlapping scales, it protects the underlying two layers, holding moisture in. This promotes shine and bounce.

Too much oil can overly coat the hair and clog the pores. This is often what happens to the skin in teens when acne is forming. Clogged pores can lead to unhealthy hair and increased oil in the face, leading to acne breakouts.

On the other hand, you can have hair that is too dry. This leaves spaces between the scales, allowing moisture to escape. Hair becomes brittle and prone to breakage. Without moisture it is no longer shiny and healthy.

In order for your hair to look beautiful you may have to take different measures than someone who has dry or even combination hair.

Tips on Dealing with Teen Oily Hair

    * Wash your hair each day – Removing excess oil can keep your hair healthy. Use an appropriate shampoo that is formulated for those who have too much oil in their hair to begin with.

    * Wash your hair twice a day if you are active – Sweating can introduce more oil into your hair. You may need to wash it more than once a day. If you do, use a milder shampoo so that you don’t strip too much oil from your hair and damage it by making it too dry.

    * Avoid using too much heat on your hair – Even oily hair can be damaged from blow dryers and curling irons. Before you style your hair, dry hair completely. Wet hair is weaker and more easily damaged.

Being a teen and dealing with your hair is not always a happy experience. If you have oily hair, these tips can help you manage it better.

Here are a few of the most effective remedies, both natural and commercial:

    A Change of Hair Products

If you have been using the same shampoo, conditioner or hair gel for some time, try switching to a different brand for three to four weeks. Dandruff may be a cause of the scalp’s reaction to certain chemicals in hair products. Simply stopping the use of those products could get rid of dandruff.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water. Rub this mixture into your scalp and let it sit for about half an hour before rinsing. Repeat this process twice a week for a month.

    Essential Oils

Sunflower oil, Emu oil and olive oil (the essential oil, not the cooking oil) have all worked for some to cure dandruff. Read the directions carefully when applying essential oils. Generally one drop needs to be diffused in quite a bit of water to keep it from being too concentrated.

    Commercial Options

There are a number of shampoos on the market that specifically target dandruff. Pay careful attention to the active Ingredients in these shampoos. Compounds that have proven to help relieve dandruff include selenium sulfide, pyrithione zinc, salicylic acid and ketoconazole.

One brand of note is Head and Shoulders, which has been on the market for fifty years. The active ingredient is pyrithione zinc and many have found it to be one of the most consistently effective cures. Head & Shoulders Classic Clean Shampoo is the top selling shampoo in the United States by dollar sales.

    Dietary Changes

Finally, one natural, affordable and healthy way to cure dandruff is to address it by changing your diet. What you put into your body has a huge impact on how your body functions. By changing what you eat, you can change the amount of moisture in your scalp.

Start by making sure you are drinking enough water. If you aren’t getting at least eight glasses of water a day, just changing this could get rid of your dandruff.

In addition, get rid of as much junk food, fast food and processed food as possible. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, which are both rich in nutrients and rich in water.

These are some of the most successful cures for dandruff that have been found.

Dry scalp, more commonly known as dandruff, is fairly common. Dandruff is basically dead skin that is falling off your scalp and getting caught in your hair. All the skin on your body dries up and peels off regularly. In fact, scientists estimate that your entire exterior skin is replaced every month. What’s unnatural is when the skin on your scalp dries up to form flecks and then gets stuck to your hair.

    How Does Dandruff Occur?

There are many reasons for dandruff. Rough shampoos, conditioners and gels can cause dryness, oiliness or an excess of acidity in the hair and scalp, which can result in excess dryness.

Diet can also play a large part. If you are regularly dehydrated, then your scalp will also be dryer. If you take in too much sodium, this could also diminish the amount of moisture going to your skin.

Dandruff can also sometimes be caused by weather. Some people find that they only have dandruff in dry and hot weather, while others are most susceptible in cold weather.

Finally, it’s also important to take natural tendencies into account. Some people just have a predisposition to a very dry or oily scalp.

    The Intermittent Issue

Some people find that dandruff sometimes appears and sometimes completely disappears. They may find themselves with dandruff for months or years, only to have it disappear almost entirely. While scientists have spent a significant amount of time examining dandruff and its causes, there are so many possible contributing factors that it is nearly impossible to pinpoint one or another as the exact cause.

A change in shampoos, hairstyles, diet, lifestyle, emotional health, and any number of other things could cause dandruff to disappear or reappear again. What is important is for people who have a tendency for dandruff to be aware of it, along with any specific behaviors that can trigger dandruff or reduce dandruff symptoms for them.

Although dandruff can be quite a hassle, fortunately enough is known about the condition that a number of cures are available.

To make our skin it look its best requires us to watch what we consume in our bodies. The skin is the major organ of our body. Whenever there is a problem on the inside of our body, it will show up in our skin. If you have ever experienced dull and lifeless-looking skin, you were probably also sick at the time.

In order to prevent the skin from looking sick, you must feed your body the right way. Eating healthily keeps your skin healthy as well. Here are some ideas of how to eat for great-looking skin:

    * Dairy products – To reduce the amount of fat, try products such as low-fat or non-fat milk, yogurt and cottage cheese. Dairy contains vitamin A, an essential vitamin for skin health. Yogurt also contains live cultures and probiotics to keep the digestive system clean and the bowels moving properly to remove unwanted waste products. A healthy intestinal system also shows in the skin.

    * Whole grains – They don’t just maintain the blood sugar level, but also contain minerals that nourish skin. Whole grain cereals and breads contain selenium, vitamin E and vitamin A. All are helpful for healthy cellular growth of the skin and reduced inflammation.

    * Omega 3 fatty acids – These are great for increasing heart health, but can also improve the look and feel of skin. Fats are needed for proper cellular membrane construction. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in plant oils such as olive oil and flaxseed oil. Also, eating cold water fish such as salmon gives you a healthy dose of it. Try to eat fish at least twice a week. Cooking with olive oil increases your daily dose of omega 3s.

    * Eat berries – Berries of all sorts are full of antioxidants, which we know fight free radical damage done in the body from cellular activity. It is this damage that can lead to wrinkles, saggy skin and other signs of aging. To keep skin strong, toned and looking its best, keep free radical damage to a minimum. Try strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and others.

    * Water – Drink as much as you can. Water gives the body an internal cleansing and is also most important for proper kidney function as it helps the body remove toxins. Try drinking at least eight glasses a day.

    * Green tea – This contains antioxidant substances called polyphenols; these are also found in chocolate that contains a high level of cacao. Polyphenols have anti-inflammatory properties, which also increase immunity levels.

Keep your body healthy-looking on the outside by feeding it well inside.

After you outgrow your teenage years, you want the acne to go with it, but often discolored scars are left behind.

Acne is a common skin disease that usually strikes in adolescence and the teenage years, but can also be a problem for some adults. It is characterized by inflammatory forms such as whiteheads, blackheads and pimples.

Sebaceous follicles in the skin secrete more oil during puberty. This oil can clog up the pores along with dead skin cells and other detritus, which can cause a pustule to form as the skin tries to get rid of the clog. An infection can set in, further inflaming the skin and resulting in a more serious form of acne.

Many teenagers, not wanting anyone to see whiteheads or blackheads on their skin, pick at the acne until they pop the skin covering the pus. This seemingly temporary fix can leave a longer-lasting problem once the acne is gone in the form of scarring, which can develop over the area and become unsightly.

Ways to Reduce the Appearance of Acne Scars

You don’t have to go through life with dark spots or scars on your face. Here are some ways to help smooth out your skin again and reduce the appearance of scarring left behind by acne:

    * Use Vitamin E – Vitamin E is good for the skin. It can help improve tone and elasticity. On the surface, using a vitamin E oil can help moisturize the skin and reduce the appearance of the scars over time.

    * Use Aloe Vera – Aloe vera is a plant where the juice has healing properties such as reducing the pain of a burn or the warmth associated with a bee sting. Using Aloe vera gel on the scars can reduce the inflammation and begin the healing process for your skin.

    * See a Dermatologist – They can suggest ways to renew your skin. One is microdermabrasion. The uppermost skin layers that are damaged are removed in this process to make way for new unblemished skin to grow. The procedure leaves the skin vulnerable for a few days while new skin is replacing the old. Microdermabrasion kits can be purchased so you can perform the procedure at home. Be advised that it will be more extensive if conducted in a doctor’s office.

    * Try detoxification – Some believe that illness or disease is a result of toxic build-up in the body. Trying a detoxification program can rid the body of excess toxins and start you on a new eating plan with healthier foods. This can also help reduce the incidence of acne and the scarring that can follow.

Use the tips above to minimize the appearance of your scars if you have suffered from acne.

What we eat plays a big role in how our skin looks. When the inside of the body is not working at optimal levels, the outside can’t either. Let us discuss what vitamins can play a part in clearing up acne.

    What Is Acne?

Acne affects the skin and usually only facial skin. You have heard of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and zits. These different skin problems can become infected and spread, leading to the acne that many experience all over their face.

There are many treatments on the market, but many don’t work for every person as they treat the symptoms, but not the root cause of the acne. Sometimes we can exacerbate our condition by the foods that we eat. If you start out with pimples, an increase in their frequency can indicate an acne infection.

    Causes of Acne

Acne can have a variety of contributing factors. Some you can’t control, such as your genetic make-up and even how your hormones are behaving. However, there are others that you can control, such as hygiene and diet.

As far as the hygiene, washing your face and exfoliating can go a long way to keeping your pores clean from future outbreaks of acne, but this will only carry you so far if the nourishment that your skin is getting is inadequate.

    Vitamins and Your Skin

To help clear up your complexion, consider what you are eating. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, we don’t eat as well as we should. Food is not just fuel for the body; each good food contains vitamins and minerals that our organs need at their most basic level. We are often missing out on many of those, and that deficiency can allow conditions such acne to flourish.

Increasing certain vitamins in your diet can do a lot to increase the health of your skin. Start by taking a multivitamin each day as many may contain the vitamins that you need.  For those do not, there are food choices that you can make:

    * Vitamin A – This is a component of some acne treatments. Acquiring it through foods such as fruits and vegetables is more desired by the body because it is in its natural form. Vitamin A also promotes new cell growth.

    * Omega-3 fatty acids – These acids are known to reduce inflammation in the tissues, and acne is definitely an inflammation. Choices include fish, fish oil, and olive oil.

    * Zinc – Boosts immune function.

    * B vitamins – Increasing B vitamins can reduce inflammation on the skin. Opt for B-complex vitamin supplements so that there are no deficiencies.

Vitamins are important to all organs, including the skin. Increasing their presence in your diet (while decreasing unhealthy choices) can improve the overall health of your skin.

Acne affects not only our face, but also how we feel about ourselves. Teens and adults alike suffer from various forms of acne.

Acne is caused by infections on the skin. Pores get clogged up with dead skin cells and mix with the oil that is secreted from them. Bacteria in dirt and other substances that come in contact with the face can lead to pus pockets forming, and inflammation can lead to pain and open sores.

If you are suffering from acne, your skin can be cleared up.

    Acne Treatment Options

    * Cleaning your skin – You may have a few pimples here and there. To keep your skin clear and avoid acne from spreading and getting worse, use a deep cleanser for your face. Dirt left behind or not removed can begin to form pimples within the pores. Use a skin cleaning system that opens the pores and removes the dirt. Then use a moisturizer to ensure that the skin doesn’t dry out. If this happens, there will be more flaking skin, inflammation and an increase in your acne outbreaks.

    * See a dermatologist – A doctor can tell you how serious your acne is. Those who have eruptions all over their face will need a different treatment than someone who has two or three pimples that appear when their hormones get going. The dermatologist can recommend an advanced cleansing system for you.

    * Tea tree oil – This is a natural treatment. Tea tree oil has antibacterial properties to keep the face clear of bacteria.

    * Skin laser treatments – Laser treatments by qualified skincare doctors can help improve the condition of your skin. Laser treatment can remove the top layer of skin and stimulate the production of collagen beneath to return a new layer of epidermis that is stronger and free of scarring from popping zits. Some believe that laser resurfacing and other treatments can influence the production of sebum by reducing it.

    * Sweat – Exercise is good for the body and the skin. It helps to move toxins to the surface and remove them in the sweat that is secreted from your pores. This, along with cleaning your face regularly, can increase the health of your skin.

    * Skin masks – Using masks can help to deep clean the pores of the skin. Once a week masks pull impurities from the skin that you may have missed with daily washing.

Acne can be a difficult problem to handle. At the first signs of acne, try these treatments to keep the skin clean and minimize any future breakouts.

If you have oily skin, it can look radiant with a few skin tips.

    What Is Oily Skin?

There are three basic skin types: oily, normal and dry. If you have oily skin, this usually means that you have a problematic T-zone. This is the area across the forehead and down the center of the face. It is prone to shine even in cooler weather but especially in warm seasons.

Those with oily skin can experience problems with unclear skin. This means acne, pimples, blackheads and that ever-present shine. It may be genetic, but there are ways to diminish the oil that is produced from causing problems.

    Tips to Help Oily Skin

    * Wash your face several times a day – Washing in the morning can remove dirt and oil that has accumulated during the night. During the day, washing your face at least once can keep the shine at bay. By washing at bedtime, any remaining oil is removed before you sleep.

    * Use a cleansing system designed for oily skin – It can include an astringent, a toner and a moisturizer. This removes excess oil and returns a balance to the skin without drying it out. A moisturizer for oily skin is not oil- based. All skin needs moisture to keep it healthy and youthful and the pores clear.

    * Wear sunscreen – Choose one especially for facial skin and that works for oily skin. It keeps the moisture in and protects your skin from sun damage.

    * Exfoliate often – Exfoliation removes all traces of dead skin which can clog pores and lead to acne. With excess oil production, it is important to keep pores clean.

    * Avoid touching your face – When hair or hands graze the face too often, it can leave deposits of dirt and bacteria on the skin. Mixed with oil, this can lead to skin irritation and acne. Wash your hands often and keep your hair tied back.

    * Avoid using lots of oil in your hair – Excess oils in the hair can be absorbed into the face and add to the already increased oil production.

    * Change your diet – Eating fatty foods can increase problems with skin that is already too oily. Eating foods that nourish the skin and fight acne are an asset to you. Choose leafy green vegetables, antioxidant foods and drink lots of water each day.

    * Wear oil control makeup – You can still wear makeup, but it needs to be especially formulated for your skin type. Mineral makeup is designed to reduce shine and skin imperfections while allowing the skin to breathe.

If you have oily skin, you can still look beautiful all the time with these few tips.
