July 20th, 2011Arthritis, Senior Health, Treatment OptionsIt seems that when your back hurts, nothing else matters as it is a condition that can truly interfere with every aspect of your life. Here is a way that you can help reduce back pain using natural techniques.
What Is Kinesiology?
Kinesiology is a new branch of medicine that was developed by chiropractors, acupuncturists, and medical doctors. It involves discovering the source of back pain and correcting it, and seems like a miracle to many who have suffered from back pain for so long, but not everything has to be difficult to accomplish.
The difference between kinesiology and other forms of chiropractic or Chinese medicine is that the muscles are tested pre-treatment and post-treatment. This muscle test involves looking at the cause of the pain. Many people look at the skeletal system but not the muscular system. In fact, they are one integral system – the musculoskeletal system.
Muscles attach to bones. As it is the muscles that raise and lower bones, looking for the problem in the muscles can be more advantageous.
A muscle is tested for weakness. A weak muscle is one that is not receiving proper signals from the brain through the nervous system. This results in misfiring of neurons and the pain that you feel.
The chiropractor uses different techniques to realign the muscle and the bones it affects. It could be that the skeletal system is out of line and causing a weakness in one muscle and tightness in another. This misalignment is the cause of the pain.
What led to the misalignment? Some back pain can be due to stress, physical trauma or emotional trauma. Maybe the back pain wasn’t the first sign of pain, but just the most persistent. A kinesiologist will check to see if the entire body is out of line before checking the back to see if there is a bigger problem going on.
With the muscle testing and adjustment, some people may feel relief instantly or within a few days. The back is then retested to see if the muscle is again getting proper messages from the brain.
Kinesiology is not just concerned with back pain. It takes a holistic look at the whole body. You may feel relief but the pain could return if the body doesn’t stay in alignment. Changes in our mental health and environment affect how our body reacts. Regular treatments can keep the body and mind in balance.
Kinesiology can teach us to keep our body in balance between treatments. Sites of weakness can result in the need for dietary changes to strengthen and keep the body in check. Healing your back pain is just the beginning.

March 14th, 2010Health, Parenting, Treatment OptionsAs a parent or someone who cares for children, it’s important to know when they’re sick. If they’re cranky, don’t feel well, and are feverish, this is clearly a sign that something is going on.
Learning how to keep a fever down in children is an important thing to know, especially if the children are too young to tell you how they feel.
Know how to take a child’s temperature. Temperatures may be taken rectally, under the arm, or orally, with different thermometers of course. You should always have one of each of these kind of thermometers in the house, and know how to use them. If you only have one regular thermometer, a good rule of thumb is: rectal is one degree hotter than the mouth, under the arm is one degree cooler.
There are also thermometers which take a temperature in the ear. Please realize each of these methods may not give you the same result. Be sure to let your child’s doctor know how you took your child’s temperature should you need to contact them, and read all instructions as to how to interpret the numbers correctly.
It’s also important to know what constitutes having a fever. Some children may have a higher or lower normal body temperature so a fever to them may be different. During one of your child’s well visits, ask the doctor at which point you should contact them if your child has a fever. They will let you know if they consider 100 degrees or a higher number to be a fever.
If your child is still alert, eating and drinking well, interested in playing, and using the restroom you may not need to do anything. A fever is the body’s way of fighting off infection; by reducing the fever you may be prolonging an illness. If you’re the least bit unsure, don’t hesitate to contact the pediatrician’s office; that’s what they’re there for.

February 20th, 2010Health, Parenting, Treatment OptionsMeningitis, or at least some forms of it, can easily transmitted by coughing or kissing. You can also get meningitis by sharing a drinking glass or sharing items which have been in or around the mouth of someone who is infected. This could be lipstick, cigarettes, or eating after one another, for example, sharing a piece of pizza or a sandwich.
How do you know if you or your child has viral meningitis or the more serious form of bacterial meningitis? Only a doctor will be able make that determination.
The symptoms are similar, which is why it’s so important to see a doctor when you or your child develops them. You may not need the same level of care when having the milder form, but if treatment isn’t started immediately with the bacterial form, the person could develop brain damage, have a stroke, or possibly die.
Many people think meningitis is a condition reserved for children and teens. However, anyone can get meningitis, although it is often spread among children and teens because they are in close proximity in schools and are more likely to share items. (The Pulitzer prize winning author Frank McCourt recently passed away from meningitis he had contracted while in a hospice).
There is a vaccine available for children against meningitis, and due to its serious and life-threatening nature, many parents choose this option and have their child inoculated.
Vaccines provide protection against meningitis, and there are two types available. One is designed for people between the ages of 2 to 55. The other version is available for people over the age of 55.
The vaccines will not provide life-long protection, but will last up to eight years. That’s why most doctors recommend being vaccinate, when the likelihood of contracting the condition is highest.
Treatment includes antibiotic treatment which is effective 90% of the time. Obviously, the sooner treatment is administered, the better the chance of a full recovery. If they determine viral meningitis is the culprit, treatment can be as simple as treating a cold or the flu. Get bed rest, drink plenty of fluids, and treat any pain with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
When you understand the dangers of meningitis, it’s easy to see how important knowledge of the symptoms is. You may not think you have to worry about you or a child contracting meningitis, but it’s good to consider getting them inoculated. Or, if you chose not to, then it is good to know the symptoms so you’ll recognize them should the unthinkable happen.

December 2nd, 2009Better Sleep, Sleep Apnea, Sleep Issues, Treatment OptionsSymptoms of sleep apnea include things that you can control, for a better night’s sleep. Smoking, weight, drinking, exercise, and medicine use are all within your power to change.
For example, just losing ten percent of your body weight can lessen the severity of your sleep apnea, as well as lower blood pressure and put less strain on your joints. Add exercise to that equation, and you have a body that is in better shape to combat the condition and oxygenate your blood.
Some use sleeping aids to get a good night’s sleep. When you have sleep apnea, these drugs can be dangerous. It is the jerking that wakes you up as the body tries to restore your breathing. If you are in too deep a sleep you will be even more oxygen-deprived.
What about surgery? Invasive techniques are often needed such that the cause will disappear, namely the tissue that is obstructing the airway. One such surgery is a tonsillectomy. It is the surgical removal of tonsils to treat obstructive sleep apnea.
Swollen tonsils can block the airway and make breathing difficult. Removing the enlarged lymph tissue opens up the airway. Adenoid tissue can also hang at the back of the throat. It is removed in a procedure called an adenoidectomy which is preformed with or without a tonsillectomy.
Those who snore a lot can reduce the symptom of snoring and obstructive breathing with a UPPP (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty). This procedure can be done using a laser to remove part of the soft palate and a portion of the uvula to widen the airway.
Pillar implants bolster up the soft palate so it doesn’t vibrate a lot and collapse over the airway during sleep. The procedure is less invasive than a UPPP and can be done in the doctor’s office.
Do you suffer from sleep apnea? The good news is that there are now many different options for your treatment. Talk to your doctors, review the results of your sleep studies together, and decide which slee

November 30th, 2009Better Sleep, Health, Sleep Apnea, Sleep Issues, Treatment OptionsSleep apnea is a condition in which people stop breathing numerous times throughout the night, due to either an obstruction in the airway, or through a lack of signals from the brain to trigger breathing while the person is asleep.
Sleep apnea and its resultant stoppage of breath, and thus oxygen, leads to broken rest and further physiological problems when you are awake. If you suspect you have sleep apnea, see a doctor and find out about your treatment options.
The doctor will take a history of your symptoms and use diagnostic tools, mainly a sleep study, to confirm your sleep apnea and the type. There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.
Both share similar symptoms but have a different cause. With obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), obstruction is caused by tissue in the back or top of the throat. With central sleep apnea (CSA), the brain forgets to signal the muscles responsible for breathing to work and you wake up repeatedly to restore breathing.
Treatments for sleep apnea are varied. The easiest and less invasive treatment is a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. It is a device much like a mask that is worn on the face at night.
Blowing air is forced into the nose and/or the mouth to keep the soft tissue in the back of the throat from blocking the airway. Because the air is continuous, sleep apnea is stopped whenever the CPAP is used and normal sleep resumes.
