Weight Watchers has been hanging tough in the diet world since the 1960s.  The program is backed by body science and thousands of satisfied dieters.  If we have your attention, here is how the Weight Watchers program works.

With this eating plan, people use a patented Points system to track their eating habits.  Based on your answers to a short survey, you are assigned a points value for your eating program.  As you lose weight, the amount of points that you can eat will be cut.  A points value is assigned to each and every food and drink including meals that you eat in restaurants.

By tracking your points and how much of what foods you are eating, Weight Watchers helps you to chart eating habits and where you need to make changes in order to lose weight and become healthier.  The program includes weekly meetings so dieters can discuss their strengths and weaknesses with others and find support.

From the Points system, evolved the Core plan.  With the Core plan, instead of counting daily points, you were assigned a list of healthy foods to choose from.  As long as you ate until you were satisfied and stuck to your list, you could lose weight just like dieters on the Point tracking, or Flex plan.

Weight Watchers went online and dieters could use e-tools to help them manage their exercise and eating.  The program provided hundreds of recipes, an online points tracker and a helpful guide determining points in each serving of your recipes.

The newest breakthrough for Weight Watchers is their Momentum program.  It combines the Point system and what they call filling foods.  Dieters start with counting points to learn the basis for choosing their foods and how to manage portion sizes.  Next, they transition into eating filling foods.  These are foods that are designed to give you more sustained energy throughout the day and to fill you up so you are not hungry all the time.

The new changes in Weight Watchers teach dieters to learn about food and not simply eat points.  There was always the hazard that dieters would eat their daily point limit but not change their views on food.  Eating 30 points worth of sweets is not the way to get healthy.  The turning point comes when dieters learn to make better food choices.

Dieters still track their eating habits with the Momentum program.  Keeping them accountable is the difference between staying on the right track and slipping back into poor food choices.

Weight Watchers equips the dieter with all they need to succeed on the program.  The support system created by the meetings aid in more permanent weight loss and not yo-yo dieting.  Getting involved in your own weight loss is invaluable.

The human body is a complex machine.  And just like any other machine, it needs the proper fuel to run.  Minerals are a part of that fuel equation.  Learn how important and integral minerals are to your health.

The body is made up of mostly water.  Within that water swims a variety of substances that are carried along through your vessels like passengers on a bus.  When the substances reach their destination, they pass through the lining of the vessel and into the cells or organs where they are needed.  Minerals, vitamins, fatty acids, hormones and amino acids are on that train.

What is the role for minerals?   Let’s look at a general overview.  Minerals are used in the fluid that makes up cells.  Have you heard of electrolyte imbalance?   The electrolytes are minerals and mineral salts that are present: potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and iron to name a few.  Many of these minerals are instrumental in building muscle tissue and bone.

When minerals are missing, the body goes through a lot of changes.  You might experience conditions like low back pain, brittle nails and hair, lackluster skin, poor digestion, depressive disorders, dental problems and heart issues.  Depending on the issue, a certain mineral may be in deficit.

Let’s look at iron.  Iron binds to heme in the blood to form hemoglobin.  It gives blood its red color and also delivers oxygen to the cells of the body.  During the monthly menstrual cycle, women lose a lot of blood and sometimes feel fatigued.  This can be due to low levels of iron.

Various foods contain minerals that the body needs every day.  Eat a variety of foods to get your minerals and also vitamins and other substances essential for life.  Animal products provide iron: red meat, chicken and fish.  Seafood provides other minerals like calcium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper, selenium and phosphorus, as well as iron.

Minerals work with enzymes to drive a variety of metabolic processes.  These minerals are absorbed into body tissues where they help regulate everything from nerve function to muscle growth.  The federal government has come up with recommended daily allowances (RDA) for a variety of vitamins and minerals that are important for the function of the body.

Where else do you find these minerals?  Some people don’t eat red meat or fish depending on their tastes.  You are in luck because vegetables and fruits are also sources of minerals.  Eating citrus fruits and berries are good for calcium, copper and iron.  Leafy green vegetables provide iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and copper.  If you don’t eat seafood, selenium can be obtained from nuts and seeds.

As long as you eat a variety of foods, you won’t have to worry about not getting enough of your essential minerals.

This diet plan is based on eating according to your blood type.  According to the originator of this plan, Peter DíAdamo, how you need to eat depends on what is inside your veins.  Here is how the Blood Type Diet works.

According to the book, “Eat Right 4 Your Type” by Peter DíAdamo, different blood types have different nutritional requirements.  Changing what you eat to fit that parameter will help you to lose weight and get healthy.

Here are the four blood type groups:

    * Blood Type A – Anyone with this blood type needs to eat more vegetables and fish on a daily basis.  Eating red meat is not recommended and dairy should be ingested in moderation.  Your digestive system is sensitive.  Only light exercise is recommended for Type A people.

    * Blood Type B – You have a strong immune system.  Unlike Type A blood, it is recommended that you eat red meat and dairy products.  Eating vegetables and fruits in quantity and a little fish is okay.  Stay away from the chicken with this blood type.

    * Blood Type AB – Your immune system is somewhat strong and you have a creative mind.  For you, a combination of the foods to be eaten for Types A and B is acceptable.

    * Blood Type O – You love to exercise and are most likely lactose intolerant.  Type O dieters eat a diet with plenty of protein and few carbohydrates and dairy products.  Avoid foods high in carbohydrates and dairy products.  Vigorous exercise will also do you well.

The diet describes how the blood can explain things that happen inside your body.  What foods you like, donít like, your allergies and what foods cause you to lose weight are all determined by your blood type.

The diet is strict in that dieters have to pay close attention to everything that they eat and drink.  In his book, Dr. DíAdamo lays out what types of foods are to be eaten for each blood type.  Your list of forbidden foods varies but can be long.  For those who are constantly on the go, fixing recipes can be time consuming.

The diet recommends exercise when your blood type is in favor of it.  Unless you have Type O, exercise will be light.  Also, the plan encourages taking vitamin supplements in addition to eating certain foods. Since most people are Type O, they will be sorry to hear that!

It has not been scientifically proven that those who use the Blood Type Diet lose weight because of their genetics or the fact that they are making healthier food choices.

Eating a well-balanced diet that is full of the nutrients you need, will help the body repair itself, boost the immune system and help you to live a longer, stronger and healthier life.

Over time the person with anorexia nervosa changes in appearance.  They may wear big clothes to hide the weight loss but if you maintain physical contact with your child you will sense the changes.  Their bodies are frail and emaciated.  The natural puberty cycle is often stunted in their bodies.  For girls, menstrual periods stop or donít start at all.

Anorexics are headed for trouble.  With the lack of nutrition being given to their bodies, the cells get what they need wherever they can.  Bones become weak because cells are robbing calcium from the bones.  Lack of energy is a common symptom because there is no fat for fuel.  The organs will eventually begin to shut down.

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by excessive fear of gaining weight.  The fear drives the sufferer to do whatever they can, no matter how extreme, to keep the weight off.  The catch here is that their distorted view of their body prevents them from ever losing enough weight.

Doctors don’t know what causes anorexia nervosa.  Lately the increase in the prevalence of the condition has been blamed on society’s image of beauty.  When young girls (and boys), see the beautiful bodies of models gracing the covers of magazines and the movie screen, their own inadequacies about their body surface.
Family dynamics have also been seen as a cause.  In families where communication is poor and affection withheld, kids may seek to find control, the control is the food that they eat.  Having high expectations that put undue pressure on the child can also lead to eating disorders.

Anorexics may begin with a diet but it doesn’t end there.  The obsession with their weight spurs them on to eat fewer and fewer meals.  They stop their hunger by drinking water or exercising more.  Even when the numbers on the scale drop, their lack of self-esteem won’t let them stop.

Because of their perceived problem, they may shy away from social gatherings, especially those that involve food.  In school, they may separate from their friends as the condition takes over their lives.  Any excuse is used to keep them out of family functions.

    Hello all!

We really hope you are enjoying our blog. We at Goddess strive to bring you the most full information about healthy living. Lately we have noticed trends and eating habits that are not healthy for anyone. It is a misconception to think only woman suffer from eating disorders. In today’s society the fight to stay on top comes from both the male and female counterparts. Bulimia, anorexia, depression these diseases do not pick the sexes they want to attack. Woman and men have different ways to deal with each situation, but please keep in mind we can all be affected!

For the next few articles we are going to talk about, Bulimia and Anorexia0 Nervosa and how they affect both female and males.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by binging and purging of food.  Bulimics have a poor self-image and the disorder is an extension of that.  Women as well as men suffer from this type of eating disorder.

Bulimia nervosa can sometimes begin as a way to finally get off the roller coaster of dieting.  Many bulimics have dieted before but without sustained success.  They begin again, only this time, they take extreme measures to try to achieve their desired body image.

While bulimia affects mostly women in the United States, a fair percentage of men have also been identified as bulimic.  Bulimics are prone to compulsions.  When they eat, they do it in secret and are out of control.  They eat until they have stuffed as much food in themselves as they can.  The binging can be due to emotional stress within their peer group or at home.

After eating as much as they can, they will immediately vomit.  Vomiting may remove the evidence in their mind that they were ever out of control in the first place.  Even after normal meals they will excuse themselves and go to the bathroom where they force themselves to throw up.

You may notice that your son, daughter or friend is bulimic.  They may have been previously addicted to something else like drugs or alcohol.  Their weight will fluctuate but it doesn’t usually reach the low level of a person suffering from anorexia nervosa.

Increasing your intake of antioxidants through food can reduce your risk of cancer.  Where are these antioxidants found?  Fruits such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries contain antioxidants.  With vegetables, stick with roughage.  Eat broccoli, cauliflower, and leafy greens to increase your antioxidant intake.  Blueberries have one of the highest antioxidant counts of any food.

Antioxidants are also found in other foods.  Consider flaxseed.  You can buy it in seed form and use it as a complement in cereals, yogurt and other foods.  They contain healthy omega-3 fatty acids – good fats.

You may want to try soy products as opposed to red meats.  You can also purchase soy milk, yogurt, tofu and soy snacks.  Unlike beef, soy is a protein that comes from plant sources and is lower in fat.

Speaking of fat, restricting your fat to healthier sources is the key to lowering cancer risk.  Instead of animal fat, use liquid vegetable oil and extra virgin olive oil.  Avoid oils from tropical sources like palm oil.

Lower your risk factor of cancer; change your eating habits.  Reduce or eliminate red meat and increase plant food sources.

For the next week Goddess will dedicate a segment for Cancer Prevention in both men and woman. Please stay tuned we will have information and cool easy recipes!

One of the factors in prostate cancer and other cancers is diet.  As a way of lowering your risk factor for cancer and managing your health when diagnosed with cancer, doctors may suggest lifestyle changes that include changes to the food you eat.  Here are some suggestions for dietary changes to help reduce your risk factors.

In countries where red meat and foods high in fat are not eaten routinely or at all, the incidence of prostate cancer is low if at all.  That suggests that food plays a role.  It has been determined that animal fat increases the level of some hormones in the body, like testosterone and estrogen.  High levels of these hormones help cancerous tumors to grow faster.

You can lower your risk by eating more whole grain foods.  This includes whole wheat, oats, and other grains.  A whole grain contains the germ, and bran.  Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is important as well.

Vegetables and whole grains provide fiber.  Fiber does many helpful things in the body.  First, it helps to lower cholesterol.  Insoluble fiber can’t be broken down by the body, but it does carry some of the fat from your diet along for the ride when it is excreted from the body.  Lowering cholesterol can lower the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Antioxidants are substances in the body that lower the amount of free radical damage.  Free radicals come from the environment, foods and lifestyle choices like smoking.  They contribute to a higher incidence of cancer.  An important antioxidant in cancer prevention and reduction is lycopene.  It is found in cooked tomatoes and other tomato products.
